The Institute of Local History (I.T.I.) was established in 2000 by researchers and experts in studying, recording and mapping the cultural and natural landscape, as they had been already actively involved since 1989 in similar projects of scientific institutions (National Hellenic Research Foundation, Landscape Archaeology Group, Greek Biotope Wetland Centre, Institute of geology and Mineral Exploration, etc.).

More specifically, the Institute of Local History is concerned with the history, archaeology, environment and culture. Its members have worked on the diachronic cultural and environmental research, the study of local societies, and the anthropogenic implications for the environment, publishing scientific papers, organising public presentations and providing education- training on these issues. Liaison with local communities is considered vital to the implementation of the projects.

One of the key roles of I.T.I. is to provide consultancy on the implementation of Local History, Archaeology, Marine Geology and Hydrogeology projects, as well as the creation and management of digital databases and digital imaging with the use of advanced Geo-Informatics
